PROBLEM STATEMENT

Help your team focus on the problem; great ideas will follow.

Innovators very often jump to solutions without a spherical understanding of the problem. This leads to suboptimal solutions, waste of resources, and, eventually, opportunity cost. This interactive form helps innovators to rethink the problem and describe its various aspects.

By constraining the problem description to one page, innovators can quickly define and share problems worth solving, and the innovation community can process them equally fast. This approach can help your company adopt a ‘standard language’ for describing business problems and thus increase the chances of identifying the right ones - the problems that deserve more focus and energy.

This form comes as an MS Word document - fully editable and customizable.

BUSINESS IDEA

Frame ideas with consistency. Make it easier to exchange ideas and spot opportunities

Ideators often have a hard time explaining their ideas with clarity. This simple form empowers innovators to describe their draft ideas quickly, in a consistent format. This compact description of ideas and concepts simplifies sharing, discovering, and consuming ideas within and between teams.

The 'Idea form' is based on the Universal Model for Ideas as presented in “The Innovation Mode” book. It can be used independently by ideators or as part of structured ideation and brainstorming events. It sets the basis for an 'innovation language' for the company - the means of exchanging ideas in an effective way. Ideas in this format are far easier to get noticed by the right stakeholders and trigger meaningful business discussions.

IDEA ASSESSMENT

Evaluate the potential of your ideas and rank them in a more objective manner

A Microsoft Excel file that accepts hundreds of ideas and ratings against a system of nine criteria. As you rate an idea (scores from 0 to 10) the system automatically computes an overall, weighted score that reflects the potential of the idea.

This is a fully configurable and customizable model that allows teams to list, assess and prioritize ideas based on nine evaluation criteria, namely the importance (of the problem being solved), the strategic alignment (of the problem with the corporate purpose), the estimated effectiveness (of the proposed solution), the technical and economic feasibility (of the proposed solution), the ease of development, the ease of operations, the estimated business impact, the level of novelty and the certainty of demand.

The model accepts a scoring for each of the above criteria and there is a weighting mechanism – you can assign weight factors to reflect the relative importance of each of the criteria in your business context. For example, the novelty of the solution might not be that important if you are not pursuing patent opportunities.

BUSINESS EXPERIMENT

Help teams understand what a business experiment is and how to define one with consistency

In a business context, an experiment can be thought of as a set of activities that help test one or more business hypotheses - usually the ones referring to the riskiest aspects of a concept.

The ‘Business Experiment’ form helps teams make the right choices and define solid, meaningful business experiments. It prompts the user to think of the learning goals and objectives of the experiment - i.e. the desired learnings or insights that the team wants to obtain via the experiment. Furthermore, it helps the experiment owner to describe the essential hypotheses that need to be tested and list the associated metrics and target values.

The ‘Business Experiment’ form guides users to set up the plan, the target audience, the experience, and the digital means to be used for collecting the required data points.

PRODUCT CONCEPT

Describe a product concept with clarity. Help your stakeholders obtain a single view of your concept

Very often, it is hard to describe a product proposition with clarity - especially when in an early, conceptual phase. The ‘product concept’ template helps product managers and business users provide a holistic description of a matured product concept - a feature idea or the envisioned product.

This form helps product managers to describe the broader context, the problem, the key players in the market, and the conditions under which the product concept makes sense. It also guides the user to describe the identified users, roles and personas, and the associated needs and epic user stories.

The template helps describe various aspects of a product concept, including the form factors it could take, the involved technology, the implementation strategy, along with the market launch, monetization, and growth plans.

HACKATHON SETUP

Organize the right corporate hackathon and set it up for success

Corporate hackathons provide a great way to inspire teams and promote creativity, collaboration, and innovative thinking. Moreover, if run properly, a series of hackathons can establish a stream of valuable ideas and boost the innovation culture. However, very frequently, hackathons suffer from a lack of purpose, limited engagement, and difficulty in measuring impact and success.

This template can help you organize hackathons that best serve the needs of your organization. It helps hackathon organizers to define the right event with clarity, plan the associated activities and set the theme, style, and purpose of the hackathon. Furthermore, it helps organizers to select the right type of hackathon according to the needs and priorities of the company. For example, a hackathon can be internal or public, physical, online or hybrid, eligible for all or only for certain teams, requiring a functional prototype as the minimum deliverable or not – some of the essential ‘parameters’ for setting up a successful corporate hackathon.

HACKATHON ASSESSMENT

Help hackathon judges evaluate projects and provide constructive feedback to participants

Use this innovation form to simplify the assessment of hackathon projects - make the process faster, more objective, and more transparent. The project assessment is done against nine criteria - hackathon judges can use this form to score projects and organize their feedback to teams.

The criteria include the importance of the problem being solved, the alignment of the problem to the strategy of the theme of the hackathon, the feasibility and the effectiveness of the concept, the ease of developing and operating it, and the impact that the implemented idea would drive, the level of novelty and the certainty of demand for the concept.

The form helps hackathon judges to justify the scoring and provide constructive feedback and directional advice to the team members. Feedback targets the concept itself, the presentation, design, and prototyping efforts along with general comments about the collaboration of the team.
